What are some nursing responsibilites/skills used in Neuro and rehab nursing?

I figured alot of this would be working with different therapies such as speech, physical, and occupational to restore one to his or her maximum ability. What all do nurses do for these types of patients? I am kind of interested in this field of nursing but don't know much about it. Thanks

Rehab and neuro nursing are usually working with people who have some type of motor impairment. On neuro units, they are the first line of defense to observe for decline in status which does happen in the acute setting. The nurses will perform neuro checks as directed and administer appropriate meds...for many this requires coumadin, heparin, etc. Diet becomes of concern when there are swallowing difficulties and nurses and PCTs will have to ensure they follow the advice of the speech language pathologist.

Once in the rehab setting, RNs continue normal nursing care, but will frequently be involved in family teaching. This may be showing a family member how to perform tube feedings, how to care for a wound, how to do accuchecks etc.

They are not as directly involved with the rehabilitative therapies since these are covered by their respective departments. However, nursing and their PCTs need to know how to move and transfer patients safely and get them to therapy on time.

It's definetely a teamwork setting.
