How do I remove plastic tile?
We have HIDEOUS salmon colored plastic tile halfway up our bathroom walls, and then dated wallpaper the rest of the way. I was told a paint scraper will remove the tile. Is that true or what is the quickest, and easiest way to remove both the wallpaper and tile? The wallpaper already seems a little loose around the edges, can it be peeled?
A heat gun, is the best way to go, they produce a greater amount of heat, than a hair dryer, and basically work on the same principle. They aren't expensive, and are available at most Hardware stores. You could rent one, I suppose, but then, you will be charged a daily charge, and how many days, will it take you to remove them all. And yes, with the heat, they do come off, easily.
The sad part is, you are left with a lot of adhesive on the walls.That is much harder to remove.
However if you are re-tiling, it may not be an issue.
The wallpaper, is a bit easier to remove, you can buy a bottle of Wall paper remover, which you add to water, and soak the paper, and leave for about fifteen minutes, then pull it off.
You will still have some scraping to do, to get it all off, but just keep soaking it, until it's wet through, and it slides off easily.
They also make a small tool, usually called a Tiger, or such a name, that when you run it over the wallpaper, it puts small holes in the paper, so the water can penetrate it, and speeds up the process of soaking the wallpaper.
Home Depot, or any hardware store, can fix you up, with these items, and fairly cheaply as well.
Also as homeowners, having a Heat Gun handy, will help out on lots of jobs around the house, when you have to remove old paint etc.
